Walnut Turkeys
It all began with this little guy right here, and it was love at first sight! I bought him at a local craft show at Immaculata High School in Somerville, NJ. It was the most adorable thing I had ever seen, and as crafters often do, I borrowed the idea and explored the possibilities. I thought it was very clever to use a wooden heart for the feet, but a more affordable option was needed for the mass production I was about to embark on, and acorn caps did the trick! My daughter contributed the ingenious touch of adding the acorn cap, and then I began making the turkeys in matching pairs.
My usual production is 500 turkeys per year, but in preparation for Colorfest, the 2023 numbers exceeded 1000 turkeys. Plus there are some new varieties this year. There are no limits or rules in crafting - experiment and have fun!
Traditional Turkey Couple
Turkeys are made in pairs, with matching bows and tails and one with an adorable acorn cap. Many turkey couples stay together, but some do fly off in different directions, which is ok! When one is purchased, their mate moves over to the singles table.
Pilgrim Turkey Couple
New in 2023! I'm part of a local free facebook swap page, and when these little hats were offered I knew just who could wear them. The buckles are painted on with gold paint marker and a bit of lace made a nice bonnet for the Mrs. I can't wait to see how these fly!
Santa and Mrs. Clause Turkey Couple
New in 2023! For years, when I tell customers that my craft season ends at Thanksgiving, I've heard "you should make turkeys with little Santa hats!" Hobby Lobby provided the perfect solution with hats just the right size.
Winter Turkey Couple
This design came about from experimenting with acorn caps. My son suggested the earmuffs when I was looking for something special for the lady turkey. I had pom poms and pipe cleaners in stock that turned. out pretty darn cute!
